Nadia and Carol

Nadia Comaneci was born on December 12, 1961 within Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej (now Onesti), Romania. Nadia is the Romanian Olympic gymnast. She has the record of being awarded 10/10 marks in an Olympic event. Bela Karrolyi was a Romanian gymnastics instructor who was later Comaneci's coach, first discovered Comaneci when she was just six years old. Her first competitive event was The National Junior Championships where she placed 13th in 1969. In the year 1970, she took home the title. Three gold medals were awarded in her first competition, a junior pre-Olympic meet in 1972, which was a the communist bloc nations. The following year, 1973 as well as 1974, she became the junior all-round champion. When she competed for the first time in senior level, Lyudmila Turkishcheva from Russia took home five gold medals as well with one silver. In 1976 she became the first female athlete in the world who used a double backwards salto to dismount from parallel bars.
